Exhibition “ЦВЕТ НЕБА ЗАГРАНИЦЫ” curated by Yulia Belousova @Diehl Cube, 13th July 2017

ЦВЕТ НЕБА ЗАГРАНИЦЫ

The starting point of this concept is the lack of discourse in exhibitions of Russian art in the German art context. The goal of this exhibition is to show the result of combining two of the most widespread forms of artistic practise: on the one hand the academicism typical of the former Soviet Union and Russia, and on the other hand the in western culture so prevalent abstraction.

In the same way East- and West-Berlin, Moscow and Berlin, were divided ideologically by an invisible wall of intolerance after the fall of iron curtain.

Currently the relationship of the two cities has reached a level of mutual support and exchange. One feels an unseeable connection, that is not only due to the shared history. It is interesting to observe how the artists with Russian roots stand out in the art scene of Berlin.

The works of emerging and established Russian artists such as Andrea Golder, Alexander Skorobogatov, Evgeni Dybsky, Lev Khesin, Maxim Brandt, Minor Alexander, Nikolai Makarov, Vadim Zakharov, and Yuri Albert, that live and work in Germany and mostly Berlin, reflect this connection „Berlin-Moscow“ in an exemplary way.

Two countries, two cities, two generations of artists – one fate.

Questions that arise as a guiding theme throughout the exhibition are: What has Germany taught us? How do you keep and integrate the lessons of the fatherland? How do you join the experiences of the past with the rapidly changing future? And where is it all leading to eventually?
