Berlin-based Russian artist Katerina Belkina is presenting her complete works in a single exhibition for the first time at Direktorenhaus Museum for Art Crafts Design in Berlin. Across 40 works, with her stunning and enthralling combination of photography and painting, the artist propels the characteristics of the Neo-Renaissance to a centre point that addresses topical issues. Katerina Belkina reinterprets this historical style as she formulates contemporary problems within a context of art and psychology. In her award-winning work “Die Sünderin” (The Sinner) she stages herself as a pregnant woman. In the background Jesus Christ can be seen along with the adulteress figure from the German renaissance portraitist Lucas Cranach The Younger. Belkina imitates the clothing of the adulteress though fills her space by imposing herself in the foreground. Through this mode, Belkina portrays a woman as she is released from the multitudes to become the protagonist of the painting. In the series ‘Paint’ Belkina combines artistic and photographic elements to appropriate the work of famous painters.
