Reading of Nikita Afanasjew @Literarischer Salon, 8.11.18

November 7, 2018

Russia: Land of Extremes and Contradictions. A reading and discussion of the current situation existing between the Crimea, Moscow and Siberia will take place this Thursday with the renowed journalist Nikita Afanasjew in Berlin-Mitte. Nikita Afanasjew will read from his new book “König, Krim und Kasatschok”. The reading as well as the  discussion afterwards will be led by Britta Gansebohm.

Nikita Afanasjew was born in 1982 in the industrial city of Chelyabinsk. In 1993 he moved to Germany’s opposite number – the Ruhr Valley. As a journalist he has made numerous trips to post-Soviet Russia and his articles have appeared in taz, Zeit online and Tagesspiegel. In 2015 he was honored with the Deutsche Reporterpreis.“I was in the Crimea three times and each time it was under the rule of a different state.” Nikita says.

Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote about the author: “Nikita Afanasjew is smart enough not to try and define Russian but to simply gain a better understanding of it. He is accordingly very measured in his judgments. He is primarily an observer, letting contradictions speak for themselves, and he questions whether individual events can play proxy for the whole . . . . Through his very real curiosity he opens our eyes to the Russian perspective without necessarily adopting it as his own. But he comes to understand – and his readers along with him – why this nation is the way it is.”
